Fungus Among Us

August Adventures in Lawn Care

I wanted to share some insights regarding the current condition of zoysia grass in the North Georgia area, particularly in light of the recent weather patterns we’ve experienced.

As you may be aware, this summer’s weather has been exceptionally variable. From mid-May through mid-July, many areas across Georgia experienced minimal rainfall coupled with daily high temperatures exceeding 90°F. These conditions led to significant drought stress for many lawns. However, starting mid-July, we have seen a considerable increase in rainfall, which has helped moderate temperatures but also introduced new challenges.

Warm-season turfgrasses, including Zoysia Grass, are generally resilient and can tolerate short periods of drought without rainfall or supplemental irrigation while maintaining commercial acceptability. They also have the ability to recover quickly following sufficient rainfall. However, the prolonged dry period combined with high temperatures earlier this summer has caused significant stress on Zoysia Grass, making it struggle to recover even with the recent rain.

Currently, many Zoysia Grass lawns are showing signs of stress. The brown and black spots appearing on lawns are most likely due to drought-induced dead leaves being colonized by saprophytic fungi, which thrive on dead or decaying organic matter. This condition is not the typical symptom of most fungal pathogens, but it is still a cause for concern as it affects the overall appearance and health of the turf.

To address these issues, here are a few recommendations:

  1. Aeration and Soil Treatment:Aerating the soil can help improve water infiltration and reduce compaction, promoting healthier root growth and recovery.
  2. Proper Watering:Ensure that the lawn receives consistent and adequate watering, especially during dry spells. Avoid overwatering, as this can exacerbate fungal problems.
  3. Fungicide Application:In cases where fungal issues are severe, a targeted fungicide application may be necessary. Consult with a turf management professional for the best options.
  4. Regular Maintenance:Continue with regular mowing, but avoid cutting the grass too short. Keep the mower blades sharp to minimize stress on the grass.
