Initial Watering Schedule (First 1–2 Weeks)

Water twice per day, ideally in the early morning and early evening. The goal is to keep the sod and the soil beneath consistently moist, but not soggy. Avoid letting the sod dry out during this period. This is when root growth begins.

Checking for Root Growth

You can monitor how well your sod is establishing by gently lifting a corner of a sod piece. If it does not lift easily, that means the roots are taking hold. This is a great sign. If it lifts easily, check the bottom. Look for tiny white, thread-like roots. This indicates the sod is starting to root and receiving enough water. If no roots are visible but the grass is still green, it is surviving but not thriving. This means you may need to maintain or slightly increase watering.

Transitioning the Watering Schedule (Weeks 2–4+)

Once you start seeing white roots or the sod is resisting being pulled up, reduce watering to once per day. Continue checking different areas, as rooting can vary across your lawn. Once the sod is firmly rooted across most areas, transition to watering every other day. Eventually, move to a normal schedule of every three days, depending on weather and soil conditions.

Things to Keep in Mind

Every lawn is different. Sun, shade, slope, and soil all affect water needs. Hot weather or sandy soils may require longer or more frequent watering. Shady or cooler areas may not dry out as fast and can tolerate less frequent watering. Keep a close eye on the color and firmness of the grass.
